Have everything packed into boxes(as much as you can), and know what is going, staying, and if you have multiple drop-off locations, which stuff is going where so your movers can pack smart. It's important to do this whether or not you have movers. 

Great Question! In general people these days have more than they used to, so instead of going off the size of your place, it's best to go off the amount and size of the items you have. I would suggest asking a mover and going into detail about what you have. The reason is, It comes down to what all you have and even the small things can add up to take more space than the big things.
